I ran across a blog post on OrganizeIT about auditing your wardrobe. It’s a great article if you want to open up your closet, empty it out and get that black hole in shape! There is even a worksheet to help you figure out what clothing goes together, helping you figure out what you are missing.
As an organizer and certified color consultant, I have a few tips to simplify your wardrobe. Go ahead, make your life easier!
- Have your “colors done”. Knowing what looks good on you makes it so much easier to shop. When you wear things that compliment your personal complexion and style, you feel 100 times better (not mention looking better!)
- Be real about your body. I love the “What Not To Wear” show. It’s not just the fabulous budget the “contestants” get (I mean come on, I would LOVE to replace my wardrobe!), but the great advice they give. The thing about that show is they don’t have a bunch of starved, super skinny, size “00″ barbie dolls on the show. They are real people off the street with real bodies. Let’s be real, if you’ve had a baby, you’ve got the “mama pouch”. Accept it, and move on. Obsessing about it or trying to squeeze it into a size smaller only makes you more miserable. Life’s too short!
- Pick two foundation colors. Pick two foundation colors for your wardrobe, and then sprinkle in other fun stuff. For example, if you chose white and black, get pants, skirt, jacket and some foundational pieces like a short & long sleeved shirt in those colors. Then add the fun colors around it in tops, etc.
- Ease up on the Imelda Marcos infatuation. If you’re like most people, having an extra addition built onto your house just for your shoes is out of the question (although it’s on my dream list!). The truth is, you need a few pair of good quality shoes to go with everything. Consider a work pair, casual pair and formal pair. If you chose black & white as your foundational colors, these would be in black. Get the best quality you can afford, and your feet will thank you – not to mention the ease of getting dressed every morning!
- Make your own “uniform”. Maybe you like to wear button up shirts, and you find one you really like and fits you well. So, buy it in a couple (or a few) different colors. Same with pants or whatever other foundational clothing you like. Change it up and add some interest with accessories and jewelry. Have fun!

Thanks for mentioning my article! One thing I would also suggest is buy clothes you like and that suit you, don’t go and try for a particular image or wanting to look a particular way. More often than not you will end up with clothes that only work with specific things/ for particular occasions/ are dependent on what is fashionable at the time. That’s if you can even find the necessary clothes in the first place
